Product and growing context
The farm sold Pieris japonica in bloom rather than only as tight buds. This archive records normal flower drop, a short February season and the need to avoid long boxed transit times.
From the original farm mailing
The original mailing recorded these observations: “Most growers sell them when they are tight and ugly–they last much longer when they are not blooming. We sell them when they are blooming. Some dropping of the pieris japonica buds are normal and we cannot ship these by truck as they don’t like being in a box for longer than 3 days. They are generally available the second week of February through the end of February. It is a short season, but the demand for these is very high.” “Sometimes we are able to supply pink Pieris japonica, also known as pink adromeda, but not always, as the pink and red varieties are very hard to find.” “Pink & White Cherry, Pink, White, & Yellow Magnolia, Prunus, Peach, & More.” “Our daughter Nina–in the blue–won the Oregon State meet this past weekend in the 100 back (setting a new meet record) and got 2nd in the 100 free. Hard work pays off–she’s been swimming year round for 9 years and results like that make it all worthwhile.”
