Farm-Grown Hydrangeas and the First Antique Colors

Late summer

The farm’s hydrangeas were beginning to antique in this summer newsletter, while shaded growing areas helped preserve some fresh-color heads.

Fresh color alongside antique tones

The original email explained that shaded areas helped maintain non-antique hydrangeas while other heads developed jewel or mermaid-like colors. That growing detail helps explain why different stages can overlap.

Gathering the bouquet palette

Nina paired hydrangeas with vine maple leaves, cosmos, snap peas, zinnias and other garden finds. Driving around the farm before work became part of finding what would suit her arrangements.

Coastal Tide grass was described at 36–38 inches tall. Ninebark, Limelight, Montbretia pods and hop vines appeared beside the hydrangeas. Ask about current grades and quantities when planning a similar palette.
