Newsletter dated September 13, 2012

A September 2012 list documents Chinese lanterns in tall and short grades, with leaves or leafless, alongside late-season hops and antique hydrangeas.

Four ways to specify Chinese lanterns

The original list offered lanterns with leaves or without leaves. Tall stems averaged 24 inches and short stems 16 inches, packed in ten-stem bunches. Some green remained on the upper bells; these are historical harvest specifications rather than a promise about today’s crop.

A late-summer texture palette

The feature coincided with the final cutting of hops and jewel-toned antique hydrangeas. Hypericum berries, grasses, amaranth, and scented geranium also appeared among the seasonal specialty cuts, illustrating how lanterns fitted into a broader autumn palette.

Order by form as well as length

When planning lantern stems for an arrangement, communicate whether foliage should remain, your preferred length, and the desired maturity of the orange bells. The 2012 price list is superseded; confirm current packs and prices with the farm.
